3 months in Tally

The blog of 2 girls that love food, new experiences, and terrible reality tv. We're on a mission to enjoy the last 3 months in Tallahassee of Em's undergraduate life, and my first months as a young professional.
This is Em cracking up at a bro’s sorry attempt at picking up the girls behind us the other night at our favorite downtown spot, Andrew’s. As much as I would love to give you a full post right now, there are quite a few pictures to go through and this week is going to fly by andddddd then all these very “us” moments will be on hold until the next time we see each other. Cannot talk about it! My goodness.

Snow cone and fireworks ended our Friday downtown get down/old school happy hour/food truck obsession filled night. I’m glad we’re kind of over the drink until shwasted drunk because at this point we would get ridiculously emotional. This chapter is coming to a close, the times we’ve shared in this city are ending and we’ll have to move on to the long-distance friendship -phone calls and Skype dates and occasional visits. It’s sad to see another friend move far away but I’m excited for Em and I can’t wait to hear about her adventures in Maine, especially since I know so little about Maine.

A much longer post tomorrow.
Which will include my failed attempt at frozen hot chocolate this evening (ugh) trial and error is my motto in the kitchen.
Goodnight, tumblr.

Spring Game

  • Excited about the FSU Spring Game?
  • I haven't been to a Spring Game since high school!
This is what our nights consist of lately. The whole idea of this blog was to get us out in Tallahassee doing things we’ve been meaning to do, but now that it’s coming to a close I find myself asking Emily what she wants to do before she leaves Tallahassee for good. I think we both were under the impression that she would end up staying here, and even people I hardly know have no idea what I’m going to do without her here. It’s becoming a little too real to me that I’ll be here without my best friend.

our lives revolve around food and sometimes the sun

SWEET SHOP

Most of us remember driving by the empty building with that old looking sweet shop sign with a strange nostalgic longing to have one of those, an actual sweet shop with shakes and malts and pastries, basically the things that would excite a college kid just as much as they would a ten year old. We decided to check this place out very randomly one night. I won’t lie, I wanted to smoke some hookah, but after Em’s “I’ll sit with you!” reply, I figured we could just go and grab some sort of beverage and call it a night. I don’t know why we were surprised that this place is freshman city. I guess it’s really been THAT long since I was 18 and thought it was SO cool to go to a hookah place with my other 18 year old college friends, drinking.. tea.

Em and I had a great time observing these kids, it felt like we were in a zoo!

I probably should’ve stuck with some coffee, but decided to try bubble tea. I wasn’t a fan. It’s weird to me, but I’d give it a chance somewhere else!

It seems like a great place to get together and either study or socialize, they’re open late, have free Wi-Fi, booth seating, and just enough people to keep you pleasantly distracted by people-watching. I’m not going to say we’ll be back there, ever, we’re just too old! I do wish this place existed for group projects after a night class, back in the day.

WATERWORKS

We love this place. The lighting, the music, the people, it’s a great place to go to get a drink and catch up. I’ve never heard anyone say, “Oh yeah, Waterworks? Eh, it’s ok.” It’s impossible to think that it’s, just ok. They know how to make you a cocktail and serve you delicious food and they do it all with a smile on their face. You’ll see the same faces each and every time you go there, because the employees love their job, and the regulars love the bar.

We each got a fruity cocktail with some fried mushrooms with the most delicious horseradishy sauce.

Next time we visit Waterworks will be for their late night Sunday brunch. What a great idea!

FOOD TRUCK THURSDAY

Next time, we’re going to BYOB because we did not do that for our first time and looked like losers -not really, but we wanted beer- and we will bring a blanket and sit down and enjoy a delicious spread of food truck deliciousness.

The food truck hub is located right across from the Lake Ella Publix, between burger king and a laundromat. We parked at Publix and crossed the street, but if you do that and get towed for some weird reason, don’t blame me! We brought along my boyfriend and his dog to the event. It’s a family, and dog friendly place! :) You’ll find some pizza, snow cones, chicken and waffles, empanadas, snow cones, cupcakes, Asian, Asian fusion, and some good ole southern comfort food. The options are overwhelming but everything looks and smells so good. I hope that the next time me and Emily go we can try a little something from each truck!

It was great to see so many people supporting these local businesses and people of all ages having a great time. What else do you have going on, on a Thursday night from 6-10? Give it a try!

ATOMIC COFFEE

I’ve been dying to check this place out since it’s all over tumblr. I was pleasantly surprised with their variety of drinks and yummy looking menu. I decided on some iced coffee that has some condensed milk in it, and it was delicious. This is a little more, us, than the sweet shop. You can come here and study, chat, or just grab a bite to eat on your way across campus. It was the perfect start to our usual spring-time Saturday adventures.

TASTRY PASTRY

Instead of grabbing a tasty and healthy lunch at Atomic Coffee, we decided on tempting ourselves at our favorite bakery in Tallahassee. A lot of people haven’t traveled down Thomasville Rd, and that’s ok, but take a calm Saturday drive that way and you’ll find shops you’ve heard of but never been too like Ten Thousand Villages (a non-profit place you’ll love) and this gem. Oh, and you’ll find Fresh Market and our favorite Tallahassee salon, Fuel.

We tested out their bagel selection for the first time and somehow stayed away from all of the sugary goodness that makes us keep coming back to this bakery for more. CLOSED on Sundays, just like Chickfila -so that’s probably when you’ll crave it the most.

NIKE

We spent a few lovely hours by Em’s pool with this calm cool and well behaved puppy, before we got (nicely) kicked out for having a dog at the poooool. So here she is, the boyfriend’s sometimes hyper, always sweet, puppy Nike.

Looking forward to a beach day with Em back home this weekend. We promise to blog :) and we’re planning the rest of the month AS I TYPE

I can’t believe it’s all coming to an end….. oh I can feel the tears coming. Wine.

Love,

Em & Leiah

Now craving: this cake from Nordstrom’s Cafe at the La Cantera in San Antonio, Texas
Tonight, I used my rice cooker for the first time to make us dinner. It was pretty tasty. Lack of blogging due to, well, lots of things. Mainly the fact that there isn’t much to share since we haven’t been doing much. We’ll make up for it soon though. I swear, a huge make-up blog post. It’ll be great.

I’m in Emily’s apartment right now cat-sitting for her and her roommate Kimmy while they’re in south Florida with our friends Olivia and Katie. Nala, Em’s cat, is watching me type every word. It’s adorable. She misses her momma.

Speaking of momma’s.. Let me have a moment here to tell you how proud I am of my friend Emily. I got an excited text from her proclaiming that she got accepted in one of the grad schools (for dietetics) she applied to. It’s been a long road of applications and volunteering, and it all paid off. I’m beaming right now, really. I wish I could be down south with the girls celebrating, but I can’t wait to celebrate again with them all once they get back.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I spent an hour on campus today looking back on places we would meet each other, and our friendship as a whole. FSU holds a lot of our memories. Those stairs are the stairs to the English building, where I spent most of my time and Em just so happened to be turning in a paper when I was early for class -our random encounter that sparked our friendship- I remember picking her up from her all girl dorm to get some off campus food since she didn’t have a car. I remember walking around campus and ending up downtown, and eating at Andrew’s. I remember reliving my last semester at FSU by meeting her on campus to get coffee. I remember our times at the gym where she would slow down just for me and have a laid back workout. I remember the breakdowns and the drunken walks to the stadium. I remember the time Emily fell asleep tail-gating before a Miami game, and refusing to admit that she was sleeping.

All of these things seem small but we became friends on that beautiful campus. And I can’t wait to see her graduate and help her move out of this apartment and on to a new school, a new place, a new experience. I can’t wait to be a part of it.

I’ll save all the sap for when that girl graduates in the spring, and I hope she’s having an epic night celebrating.

Love you, Em!
